BW4: Bingo Quest: Dragons

Happy Sunday! Let's dive into L.E.S.T.E.R's Bingo Quest with Dragons!  Whether they are good or bad, we enjoy reading about dragons, experiencing them through the eyes of the characters such as the personable Temeriare ridden by Captain Laurence during the Napoleonic wars in Naomi Novik's series, or the fear they generate such as Smaug in The Hobbit.   Dragons or similiar creatures appear in every culture, universally symbolizing transformation,  yin and yang, or guardianship.  In eastern culture they symbolize control and power, whilst in western culture evil and chaos and heroism.  

I have several books on my TBR related to dragons including: James Rollins epic Moon Fall trilogy, Samantha Shannon's Root of Chaos, Richard Knaak's Omnibus Legends of the Dragonrealm, and others.  Including Stephen King. 

Did you know he wrote a book about dragons called The Eyes of the Dragon published in 2016.

Bronson Pinchot (remember the tv show Perfect Strangers back in the 90's) is the narrator of the audiobook.  I'll let you now how it turns out.

Join us for our 17th year of our annual Read 52 books in 52 weeks reading adventure. 

The goal is easy - Read 52 Books - Or if you aren't up to 52 but want to join in, you can set your own goal.  

We don't have any set reading lists so how you get there is up to you. However, we do have a variety of challenges including weekly, monthly mini challenges, annual and perpetual challenges to entice your reading taste buds.   

2025 52 Books Bingo - 25 new categories which will take us on a exploration from the obscure to the well known.

2025 Dragon Bookology - This year we're flying around the world with fictional dragons, spelling out their names or reading the books in which they play. 

2025 A to Z and Back Again - All the way from A to Z and back again as we play with words.  

Participate in one or more of our perpetual challenges:  

Agatha Christie  -- Read her books in chronological order as listed, group by detective or collection, or randomly if you choose. Read at least three per year.

Mind Voyages - A science fiction / fantasy challenge through the decades, exploring the Hugo and Nebula winners and nominees, Philip K. Dick, and Robert Heinlein. 

Well Educated Mind --  Continue to explore the classics in 6 categories: Fiction, Autobiography, History/Politics, Drama, Poetry and Science. 

or dip into past challenges such as Brit Tripping, Dusty and Chunky, Feed Your Muse, Inspiration, Nobel Prize Winners and Sounds of Silence.

There is a little bit of something for everyone. Read widely or wildly, follow rabbit trails, read outside your comfort zone or stick with the tried and true. 

The mini and perpetual challenges are all optional, Mix them up anyway you like and follow your own path in the quest to read.  

The challenge runs January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2025

Our book weeks begin on Sunday, except for week one which begins on Wednesday January 1st and runs through January 11. 

Participants may join at any time. 

All forms of books are acceptable including e-books, audio books, etc. 

Re-reads are acceptable as long as they are read after January 1, 2025

Books may overlap other challenges.

BW3: 52 Books Bingo - Space Opera

Happy Sunday! Today is  Appreciate a Dragon Day, created by Donita K. Paul, author of the Dragonspell Chronicles back in 2004 to celebrate our favorite dragons in books and television. Great series by the way, which I enjoyed and has since disappeared into the book jungle in my son's room. 

Combine dragons, beasts and other fantastical or scary creatures that characters may encounter in outer space with our first 52 books bingo category - Space Operas and what do you have? Scary and/or thrilling, entertaining stories set in outer space, alternative worlds, and other planets. 

I came across Barnes and Nobles 55 Essential Space Operas from the Last 70 Years and took a trip down memory lane as I've read quite a few of these books over the years and still have them in my personal library.  From Harrison and Heinlein, Niven and Asimov to Weber and Donaldson to Scalzi and Chambers.  I currently have a few on the nightstand I haven't read such as Corey's Leviathan Wakes to Vinge's Snow Queen.  They are in the queue for this year.  

11 of the best sci-fi books that transport you to another world reminds me to move Robinson's Red Mars as well as Ursula Le Guin's Left Hand of Darkness up in the queue as well.  Both dusty books have been calling to me to read sooner than later. 

And don't forget Star Wars which my son loves to read, as well as Star Trek novelizations. 

A to Z and Back Again - our letter and word of the week is C - Conundrum.
